OUGD601 / Wireframes

In Second year, I learn’t that wireframes are without doubt the key to an efficient user interface. From content audits to usability testing, even a low fidelity wireframe can be used for many purposes right through the application development lifecycle.

The wireframes that I have created are simple as possible as too much detail at the beginning of my deisgn may add confusion and could potentially create some limitations in different programs.

The benfits of these wireframes will bring clarity to my design, allowing me to work through all the interactions and layout that I may need to consider.

OUGD601 / Practical Icon

I jumped straight in photoshop and started to design my icon without even doing any research on app icon design which was a mistake that I learnt very quickly as the icon is not visible when placed on an iPhone screen as no one will be able to read it.The app icon will always be followed by the app name, so I have no reason to use the above as I have absolutely no reason to put the title in my design.

Researching Into Icons

After doing some extensive research the first thing I needed to understand when setting my icon is what exactly my app icon is and what job it has to perform. The app icon is a visual anchor for my game. This tiny piece of branding is one of the most important for an app as it's not only needs to look attractive and stand out but ideally also communicate the core essence of my application.

Scalability

Something that I didn't consider in my previous design was Scalability  as it's considered as a  important aspect of an icon because the icon is going to be shown in several places throughout the platform, and at several sizes, it’s important your creation maintains its legibility and uniqueness. It needs to look good on the App Store, on Retina devices and even in the Settings panel.

After changing my icon to something much more clearer, I noticed another problem which was the colour As I decided to go for something different (purple) however majority of aesthetics in my game are light blue so needed to be changed because There’s  needs to be consistency between the experience of interacting with my app icon and interacting with the app it represents.

OUGD601 / Practical Research / Colour Research

Research has revealed that a signature colour can increase brand recognition by 80%. Even without seeing their logo, most people could recognise a Starbucks’ drink by its characteristic green straw. According to Reboot’s study, when shown a selection of five made-up company logos 78% could recall the primary colour of the logo, compared to only 43% who were able to remember the name.

So how can you go about choosing the right palette for your business?

Why not look at what the most successful brands have done with their logos? Reboot analysed the top 100 global brands to see what the most popular branding colours were:
34% used the colour black in their logo. 30% used the colour blue in their logo. 30% used the colour red in their logo. 9% used the colour yellow in their logo. 7% used the colour green in their logo. 6% used the colour grey/silver in their logo. 5% used the colour orange in their logo. 2% used the colour brown in their logo.

The study also showed that blue was most commonly used within the tech industry, red was preferred by automotive companies and black was by far the most popular choice for luxury brands.

OUGD601 / First thoughts

OUGD 601 COP - Your CoP 3 project question/title will be an evolved form of this original question.

To what extent does Aesthetic ‘Style’ reflect the context, audience and/or function of contemporary Graphic Design?

Is an aesthetic style a fundamental to branding design and its relationship with the consumer?

How is aesthetic style a fundamental tool in the making of a brand?

how does image align with aesthetic style and branding?

Research plan:
To develop a better understanding of my subject, documenting an exploration of sub-topics and ideas that can be explored in the dissertation. Following this I can refine these ideas and begin to identify a working title, furthermore, I will explore seminal texts and identify sources that will aid the progression of my understanding before writing can commence.

Exploration of sub-topics and ideas
My research began by listing potential topics and questions that I could possibly explore and begin looking into. As I'm personally interested in branding, I began investigating how Aesthetic styles link with consumers and audiences.

How do brands influence its consumers into buying products?

  • adds value to the brand through packaging

  • The success of the brand is determined by its ability to create value for the customers.
  • The brand’s strength and of the brand value.
  • The importance of Customer Loyalty
  • The consumer has a habit of buying well-known brands because they trust them.
  • Aesthetic, Marketing and branding
  • Brand financial/ competitive
The Aesthetic relationship between a brand and its consumers?

  • Does the design of the Packaging make life easier or does it make it more difficult.
  • The appearance of the product/brand helps impact their perception.
  • Packaging
